Cosmic Revelations: Exploring Astronomy's Frontiers
Presenter: Daniel Godinez
Daniel Godinez, Ph.D. candidate in the field of Astronomy, shares his path to becoming a modern astronomer, the goals of modern astronomy, and the many exciting questions puzzling us today. He includes cutting-edge research, the mystery of the expanding universe, and the James Webb Space Telescope's latest discoveries. He offers some of the implications of gravity waves, and the question regarding dark matter and its role in cosmic evolution. Daniel describes the quest for missing worlds in the solar system and how AI can help in this search, as well as the AI models he has engineered.

    A brilliant presentation on the most recent astronomical findings, and a window into what is ahead in astronomical research using A.I. and the new Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile. Daniel covered a wide range of topics and is a wonderful primer for anyone seeking knowledge in modern astronomy. The explanations are crystal clear and the slides are excellent. The last section of the talk included a live demo of A.I. programming. A very enjoyable experience.🌠

      Hello Poland! Over a 40 year period, Russell published 14 books of poetry. Many of his poems were short, one or two pagers, only a few of which are read out in the presentation. In regards to a comparison with Blake, his biographer Henry Summerfield wrote: "AE, a visionary artist akin to Blake, also had affinities with those saints whose boundless love of their fellows is nurtured by an austere self-discipline. Unlike Blake…he resembled Mahatma Gandhi in that his personality was not transformed by a sudden conversion but moulded by the patient exercise of willpower over many years.”

    The cost of housing in many places is distorted by "foreign" ownership. A significant part of housing in London is owned by non-resident Arabs, a significant part of housing in San Francisco is owned by non-resident Chinese. As much as 20% of this housing remains unoccupied. Locals cannot compete with the "foreign" money. How much of the housing is owned by non-locals in Santa Barbara? How much of the housing in Isla Vista is owned by non-locals? What we have is a reverse colonialisation where the profits from local housing are drained from the local economy. How can this be reversed? Limits to the growth of non-local ownership of real estate? Small and local is beautiful? Boycotts of the large and ugly?

  • @MrFinnNielsen

    CAN YOU SUGGEST A MODEL OF SANTA BARBARA BASED ON LIMITS TO GROWTH AND SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL? HOW MIGHT SUCH A MODEL BE IMPLEMENTED?

    • @mauricebisheff3090
      @mauricebisheff3090 Рік тому

      Wonderful question. Professor Raghavan N. Iyer stated that we can have "A City of Man" globally and even in a city like Santa Barbara (or elsewhere)...if we create the conditions for it. And, we as human beings have the potential and power to approximate that if we can act with some virtue and an altruistic view informed by a living awareness of our moral and functional interdependence. "We" not "I". The Golden Rule in all universal religions. These are the preconditions to any model since all models are based on assumptions as Schumacher points out. These assumptions assume a shift in paradigm first of thought, where metaphysics and ethics become living powers in us, not abstract speculations. We can live by universal principles as did Benjamin Franklin or Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King for example without having to be "perfect". Perfect is honestly doing the best we can with good motive. This means every day attention , practice, reflection and error correction for each of us as well as appreciation of those uplifting and universal teachings we select as guideposts. See pages 94-95 and other excerpts in Small is Beautiful paperback, Perennial Library for the need for a non-materialistic metaphysics and ethics Thus if enough persons will act on behalf of the Human Family, not just their selfish prejudices, truth and human experience will converge with each other over time. We will begin to widen and deepen the circumference and vision of their thoughts and actions, to act more universally which means more creatively and inclusively in the particular situation. This can become a solvent to materialism (and underlying classism and racism) and to the religion of real estate ("not in my back yard"). As to concrete policies, I think a sustainable planning model and process would have a mix of the following features, almost like concentric cricles from the bottom-up. 1) Self-reliance in communities of place (30,000 population) which includes flexible zoning. Limits to growth does not mean absolutely no growth. 2) At the municipal level, a mix of government housing and community land trust strategies for both urban buyers and renters which strategically can hold enough parcels in a neighborhood together while shielding them from the speculative real estate market, including foreign buyers, allowing all income types access. 3) A mix of co-housing and intentional communes which provide a basis for sharing and exchange on intimate level. This encourages open community and connection. At the level of neighborhood or district or community of place, universities could develop indicators of quality of life and environmental footprint descriptors like a "dashboard" so it becomes part of our consciousness to make "less is more" yet celebrate diversity in life styles. At a state or national level, a basic income policy is affordable via taxes to reduce the precarity of life and recognize our fundamental interdependence with each other at a state or national level. We can make human values (Love) , not economic values, come true in the concrete in our daily rounds and in public policy, wherever we can with a life well-lived.

    It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461
